Together Through Books: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed on the third Monday of January, honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a pivotal leader in the American civil rights movement. Dr. King dedicated his life to advocating for equality, justice, and nonviolence, inspiring change through his speeches, writings, and peaceful protests.

This day is a time to reflect on the values he championed—such as compassion, unity, and the importance of standing up against injustice. It is also a call to action, encouraging all of us to make our communities better through service and kindness.

At home, families can celebrate by learning together. A simple activity is to create a "Dream Board." As a family, write or draw your dreams for a kinder, more inclusive world. Discuss how you can help make those dreams a reality, whether by practicing kindness, volunteering, or standing up for others.

Here are two great books to help kids learn about Martin Luther King Jr.:

  1. "I Am Martin Luther King, Jr." by Brad Meltzer - Part of the Ordinary People Change the World series, this illustrated biography introduces Dr. King’s life and legacy in a way that’s engaging and relatable for young readers.

  2. "Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." by Doreen Rappaport - This beautifully illustrated picture book pairs Dr. King’s inspiring quotes with key moments from his life, making his message of equality and peace accessible for children.
