Together Through Books: Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 that encourages people around the world to protect and care for our planet.  Here are some reading picks to go along with that important event.  Also check your embassy calendars to see if there is anything local available for you to do to make a difference.

Wonder Walkers by Micha Archer, grades K-4

This picture book allows us to see how the Earth has so much to offer: from oceans that act like baths and soil that blankets the ground. What do you notice when you walk down the street or through a park?  Are there similarities you notice with another place you have lived?

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, all grades and ages

This long time classic is recommended for all ages as it’s theme of “you should always give more then you take” is a wonderful reminder when celebrating Earth Day.  In this timeless, Dr. Seuss story, the Once-ler takes you on a journey through the fictional town of Thneedville to teach you about his mistakes, what he learned, and how even you can make a difference.

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

This month’s adult pick, written by a botanist,  uniquely blends scientific knowledge with Indigenous wisdom to explore the relationship with the natural world. It embraces the idea that plants and animals are our oldest teachers.
