Together Through Books: Indigenous People’s Day 2024

Indigenous People’s Day is Monday, October 14. How will you celebrate? We often celebrate by reading! These are some of our favorite reads for students:

When We Were Alone by David A. Robertson (author) and Julie Flett (illustrator) - recommended for Middle Grades - This story told between a grandmother and her granddaughter explains how the grandmother reclaims her heritage after spending her young life in boarding school. This tale of strength, and courage empowers all listeners.

Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Mailard (author) and Juana Marinez-Neal (illustrator) - recommended for Elementary - Shows the power of a unifying cultural food. Fry bread originates from the 300 mile walk and over 500 North American tribes are included in this text to highlight the Native history, culture and community behind the deep fried dish called fry bread.

For our older students and adult readers, Boston College put together this great list of books by indigenous authors. This list includes a wide variety of genres to entertain and educate.
